Allawi leads in Iraq vote count

03-17-2010 08:26 BJT Special Report:The future of Iraq post-US withdrawal |

Iraq's former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi has edged past Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki in results from Iraq's March 7th vote. The development is a reversal of fortunes.

Allawi's narrow lead in the national vote count over Maliki's State of Law bloc is somewhat of a surprise. Allawi is now ahead in five of 18 provinces.

With about 80 percent of an estimated 12 million votes counted, only about 9 thousand votes separate Maliki's and Allawi's coalitions. Definitive results could take weeks.
