World Expo wind simulation system

04-26-2010 08:15 BJT Special Report: Shanghai World Expo 2010 |

When the hottest days of summer arrive in Shanghai, visitors to the World Expo site will not find themselves sweltering in the heat. Designers were considerate obviously had their comfort in mind.

Chief designer Wu Zhiqiang says this program is the biggest wind simulation system in the world. It'll that ensure cool breezes reach every corner of the site.

In Wu Zhiqiang's lab, a huge screen displays a simulated Expo Site, in which every window of all the buildings can be seen clearly.

The simulation allows them to calculate the wind power that may affect the buildings on the Expo Site from five o'clock in the morning until six o'clock in the evening.

Climate data of different seasons, weather conditions and the angle of the sunlight are combined to improve the calculations.

Wu Zhiqiang, Chief designer, said, "The hardest part is the large amount of data. Our database is run by twelve computers of the national lab."

The environmental simulation allows the layout of the buildings of the expo site to create natural wind circulation.

Wu Zhiqiang said, "We know clearly the potential direction of the wind, and we are able to relocate it in a better way, making the wind go to every corner. Besides, we count out the wind power at different floor of a building, so with the same temperature and same humidity, we can keep the room cool without operating the air conditioner. "

Wu Zhiqiang says the expo has given a boost to China's scientific research, and the country is leading the way on large-scale wind simulation systems.
