Myanmar verifies water festival bombs as grenades

05-03-2010 14:24 BJT

YANGON, May 3 (Xinhua) -- The Myanmar authorities have verified that the series of three bombs exploded at a water festival pandal in Yangon on April 15, are grenades, while the one left unexploded is a timed bomb, the local Weekly Eleven reported Monday.

The unexploded bomb was found inside a Myanmar Beer can near the scene and was later identified as a timed bomb, the report said, assuming that the hand-phone-operated timed bomb failed to detonate as the signal was interrupted by some passing security police trucks leading to failure of response when the button was pressed.

The authorities assumed that the timed bomb was targeted at the security forces and rescue workers after the prior three bomb attacks.

Despite the findings, exposure of the bombers is not yet claimed by the authorities.

A series of three bombs blast one after another in front of a water throwing pandal, named X-2-O, on Mingala Taung Nyunt township's Kandawkyi Ring Road at Kandawkyi lake park area on April 15 afternoon when hundreds of thousands of revellers were enjoying watering.

The three bombs killed 10 people and injured 170 others.

Suspecting that two people threw grenades onto the water throwing pandal to cause the casualties, the Myanmar authorities have announced offering of 1 million Kyats' (about 1,000 U.S. dollars) cash reward for providing information leading to the capturing of the terrorists involved the incident.

The authorities charged some anti-government organizations in exile with masterminding the bomb attacks during the water festival.
