KINSHASA, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Having been in Kisangani, a northern town of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) since April 2010, the scientific team surveying River Congo on what is termed as "Boyekoli Ebale ya Congo 2010" (study of river Congo) has reported the discovery of more than 250 rare species.

In the report, the head of the project, Nicaise Drazo, said on Sunday that the expedition team composed of both Congolese and Belgian scientists has published the first results of its scientific research on the finding of species of rare fauna and flora.

"There was a total of 150 different animals out of about 20 species, 875 large fish, about 20 species of small sized fish, 62 superior types of grass some of which had already been identified, " Drazo declared.

The Belgian scientist said he was satisfied with this first discovery.

"You could think that there are some species that we could not find but which we have just discovered here. It is truly extraordinary. But what should be pointed out is that along River Congo, with a radius of about one km, we have found close to 50 different species. It is fantastic and this is a very positive outcome which should make us hope for more," he explained.

Prof. Antoine Bode of Kisangani University, who was also a member of the expedition team, said there are a number of reptiles ranging from big crocodiles and gigantic varanus, not to speak of small tortoises, snails and snakes.

"River Congo is a real reservoir of riches in fauna. More research must be carried out because about 30 families are yet to be determined," the Congolese scientist stated.
