ROK Pavilion in a youngster's eyes

05-12-2010 10:44 BJT Special Report: Shanghai World Expo 2010 |

SHANGHAI, May 11, 2010 (Xinhua) -- "To unfold the most sophisticated urban space through the characteristics of Korean alphabet", is the aim of the ROK Pavilion. Located in the Asia section, the three-story pavilion is composed of 20 basic letters of the Korean consonants and vowels, trying to tell a story about the ROK and people from the country.

Lee Je Yeon, a 22-year-old Korean volunteer who can speak fluent Chinese, now works as an interpreter for VIPs in the ROK Pavilion. Lee had studied in China for 9 years since she was a fourth grade primary school student, and now she is a sophomore in Sogang University in ROK.

Lee said she was proud of the pavilion's design. According to Lee, the alphabets on the exterior build up 110 sentences, which came from the art works of Ik-Joong Kang, a renowned Korean artist. "The meaning is carried through sentences in Korean language, not by single character," said Lee, "the bright colours of the characters indicate that our people are passionate and music lovers."

The ROK Pavilion covers an area of around 6,160 square meters within Zone A of the Expo site. The pavilion features a theme of "Friendly City, Colorful Life". The main exhibition area on the second flood is divided into four sections--culture, technology, humanity and nature, where visitors will experience the current and future urban life of the country.

In Lee's eyes, the most charming part of the pavilion is the slide shows expressing the inner emotions of Korean people. "The slide shows tell our sensitivity, love, kindness and friendship to Chinese people," said Lee.
