The personal tourist visa requirements for Chinese people to visit Japan will be relaxed substantially beginning on July 1, 2010, announced the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Ministry of Justice and National Police Agency decided on May 8. The requirements for applicants' annual income will be decreased to between 30,000 and 50,000 yuan from the current 250,000 yuan, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported on May 9.

According to the report, cities authorized to issue the visas include Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, and more will be extended inland and in northeastern cities such as Chongqing, Shenyang and Dalian where there is a Japanese Embassy present.

The Japan National Tourist Organization conducted a survey which showed that Chinese tourists' purchasing power in Japan has surpassed that of European tourists. The report said the relaxing of the visa requirements will attract over 400 million Chinese tourists. The Japanese economy is in a prolonged downturn period and a large number of Chinese tourists' visiting will be helpful to the recovery of Japanese economy.

Since July, 2009, the Japanese government began to issue personal tourist visas to the wealthy from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou who earn an annual income of more than 250,000 yuan.
