Atletico Madrid fans celebrate Europa League success

05-14-2010 08:29 BJT

MADRID, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Tens of thousands of Atletico Madrid fans took to the streets of the Spanish capital on Wednesday night to celebrate their team's Europa League win over Fulham.

Two goals from Atletico striker Diego Forlan, the second five minutes from the end of extra-time, gave Atletico a 2-1 win and the club's first European trophy in 48 years.

After the final whistle, fans began gathering at the Plaza Neptuno, situated in the center of Madrid, on the Paseo del Prado.

Soon that main thoroughfare was totally blocked by singing and chanting supporters, many of whom cast their gaze to the nearby Plaza Cibeles, where local rivals Real Madrid celebrates its triumphs. However, apart from songs mocking Real Madrid, few Atletico fans made their way to Cibeles, which had been condoned off by the police.

The celebrations lasted to the early hours of the morning, although there were some disturbances when a group of supporters refused to abandon their celebrations and threw bottles at the police around 3.30 am.

Atletico Madrid will parade the Europa League trophy through the capital this Thursday. A bus carrying the players and the trophy will leave the Vicente Calderon Stadium at 17.00 local time and make its way through the city, stopping again at Neptuno, before visiting the Madrid Town Hall to offer its triumph to the city.

Atletico's last success was in 1996 when the club won a domestic league and cup double.
