"Lucy" belongs to a branch of the human tree known as Australopithecus afarensis, which lived in Africa about 3 to 4 million years ago, the Ethiopia Pavilion commissioner general Sisay Getachew told a crowd of visitors in front of "Lucy" waiting to be unveiled.

Deemed as the earliest known hominid, "Lucy" had a brain with an estimated size of about 400 cubic centimeters, much smaller than the human brain of about 1200 to 1600 cubic centimeters. And archaeological examinations showed she had been a mother, according to Getachew.

The fossilized partial skeleton was named after the Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," that played at the archaeological camp the night of her discovery by American paleontologists Donald Johanson and Tom Gray in 1974 in Ethiopia's northern Afar region.
