Burgers, fries may trigger asthma attack

05-17-2010 13:34 BJT

BEIJING, May 17 (Xinhuanet) -- A new study shows high-fat food such as burgers and French fries may lead to asthma attack, media reports said Sunday.

The study, launched by Australia researchers targeting 40 asthma patients, found that those who had high-fat meals had increased inflammation in their airways soon afterward, and did not respond as well to treatment as those who ate low-fat ones.

Results of the study are preliminary, but they suggest cutting down on fat might be a way to help control asthma.

"If these results can be confirmed by further research, this suggests that strategies aimed at reducing dietary fat intake may be useful in managing asthma," said leader of the study Lisa Wood, of the University of Newcastle, in an email to LiveScience.

The results will be published at American Thoracic Society's International Conference held from May 14 to 19 in New Orleans.
