UAE university holds photo show on Chinese naval warships' visit

ABU DHABI, May 17 (Xinhua) -- A leading university of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) kicked off a week-long photo exhibition Monday to mark two Chinese naval warships' first-ever visit to the Gulf nation and the region earlier this year.

Chinese ambassador to the UAE Gao Yusheng and John R. Cryan, associate provost of Zayed University, inaugurated the exhibition, which showed photos all taken by students during the Chinese naval warships' visit in March.

After seeing the exhibition, Gao said the photos embody not only UAE students' ardent love for photography, but also their hope for learning more about China.

"From these pictures, we can feel UAE students' eagerness for more knowledge about China, as well as their willingness to make efforts to boost ties between the two countries," he said.

The Chinese ambassador voiced his belief that every picture taken by the students will help China and the UAE strengthen their friendly relations of cooperation.

"I also hope they can contribute to the development of the two countries' relations after their graduation," Gao added.

Echoing Gao's remarks, Cryan said Zayed University and the Chinese embassy have been in cooperation since 1991, with the aim of popularizing the Chinese culture and history among teachers and students.

"However, most recently we are involved in two adventures -- one here with the students from the College of Communication and Media Sciences for their project as you've seen in this exhibit, and with our soon to be established Confucius Institute," he said.

Cryan added that Zayed University was strongly committed to cultural exchanges between the UAE and China, saying, "We look forward to many successful days in the years to come."

According to an agreement signed between Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) and Zayed University last November, BFSU will help Zayed University apply for the establishment of a Confucius Institute, which is expected to be set up later this year.

On March 24, Frigate Ma'anshan and Comprehensive Supply Ship Qiandaohu, part of the fourth Chinese Navy Escort Task Group, paid a historic visit to Abu Dhabi after completing the escort mission in the Gulf of Aden aimed at protecting commercial ships in pirates-harassed Somali waters.
