DPRK fishing boat briefly crosses western border: gov't

05-18-2010 14:16 BJT

SEOUL, May 18 (Xinhua) -- A fishing boat from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) briefly crossed a tense maritime border between the two warring Koreas early Tuesday but returned to DPRK waters after a warning from South Korea, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said.

The violation followed similar incursions on Saturday by two DPRK naval boats, which violated the de facto border called the Northern Limit Line, a scene of two fatal naval clashes between the two Koreas for the past decade, and headed northward after two warning shots from the South Korean navy.

The JCS declined to comment on intentions of the latest incursion, which comes at a time when suspicions are rising over Pyongyang's hand in a deadly sinking of a South Korean warship near the contentious border that the DPRK has refused to acknowledge.
