Colombian presidential candidate to be notified of legal process in Ecuador

05-18-2010 16:22 BJT

QUITO, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Colombian presidential candidate Juan Manuel Santos will be notified of a legal process against him in Ecuador, an Ecuadorian judge said Monday.

The Ecuadorian Prosecutor's Office also demanded Santos' extradition, as he is accused of ordering a raid against a camp of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) on the soil of Ecuador in 2008, when he was Colombia's defense minister.

The notification will be sent in the coming days through Colombia's consulate in Lago Agrio.

"It was arranged to fulfill the legal notification procedure. Whether he answers the notification or not, the process will continue," said judge Daniel Mendez, who is in charge of the case in Sucumbios province.

An arrest warrant against Santos was issued by an Ecuadorian court in April, which strained relations between the two countries.

Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa accused Santos of ordering the bloody raid, which had left at least 25 people dead, including senior FARC commander Raul Reyes, one Ecuadorian citizen and several Mexican students.

Santos, presidential candidate for the ruling Social National Unity Party, is a front runner in the election campaign. The Colombian presidential election will be held on May 30.
