Safety facilities rolled out in China

05-20-2010 09:00 BJT

BEIJING, May 19 -- China unveiled its first underground refuge system for coal mines on Tuesday, to help protect miners from mishaps during their work.

The refuge system, initially consisting of eight mobile safety chambers and a permanent underground shelter, was recently introduced as a national pilot project at the Changcun coal mine in Shanxi province, said the Lu'an Mining Group Corporation that owns the mine.

"We are prepared to take five years to push the use of six mine safety systems, including emergency refuge systems at all coal mines in the country," Zhao Tiechui, deputy chief of the State Administration of Work Safety, said on Tuesday.

The new refuge facilities are part of the first safety system. Other five systems involve monitoring mine safety, locating miners, emergency ventilation, emergency water supply and communication between surface and underground work.

The refuge facilities will act as the last safeguard for miners in all kinds of mine disasters, Zhao said.

Each mobile refuge chamber can provide up to eight miners with emergency underground shelter from blasts, flames, toxic air and floods for as long as four days, according to Rebirth Technology Co Ltd, the producer of the chambers based in Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi province.

"Compared with similar products made in the United States, ours have much better heat insulation," said Duan Guangcheng, a factory director from the company.

Coal mines in China are said to be more prone to methane gas explosions and underground floods than those in the U.S. and Australia.
