Canada welcomes UN draft resolution regarding sanctions on Iran

05-20-2010 11:37 BJT

OTTAWA, May 19 (Xinhua) - Canadian Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon welcomed a new UN draft resolution regarding sanctions on Iran, which permanent UN Security Council members have circulated to all members for discussion.

Cannon said in a statement that Canada encouraged all members of the UN Security Council to work together to deliver a sanctions resolution.

"The Government of Iran must address the serious lack of confidence that members of the international community have in its nuclear program," he said. "We remain concerned about the potential military links to Iran’s nuclear program, and Iran has made no attempt to comply with UN Security Council resolutions.”

Cannon expressed Canada’s strong support to further sanctions through the UN Security Council, and its willingness to work with its allies to encourage effective responses to the threat that Iran posed to international peace and security.

Iran signed an agreement with Turkey and Brazil in Tehran on Monday, by which it will ship most of its low enriched uranium to Turkey in exchange for the 20-percent uranium fuel needed for its Tehran reactor. The arrangement, however, has failed to cool the Iranian nuclear dispute.

Iran's move came one day before the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany announced their agreement on a draft resolution proposing new sanctions against Tehran.

Head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali-Akbar Salehi said Wednesday that West's sanction threats against Iran are discredited, the semi-official ISNA news agency reported.
