Malaysia's April sales show double-digit growth again

KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 (Xinhua) The April sales value of the manufacturing sector in Malaysia continued to post a year-on-year double digit growth of 19.6 percent, or 7.03 billion ringgit (2.16 billion U.S. dollars).

The recorded value was 42.9 billion ringgit (13.16 billion U.S. dollars), compared with the 35.9 billion ringgit (11 billion U.S. dollars) in the corresponding month a year ago, the Malaysian Statistics Department said.

According to the latest release by the department, the increase was generated by the growth in the sales value of 77 industries out of 116 industries covered in the survey conducted by the department.

The major industries whose sales value increased significantly include refined petroleum products, basic industrial chemicals, television and radio receivers, basic iron and steel products, and motor vehicles.

Meanwhile, the department said that the productivity or average sales value per employee in April had increased by 16.5 percent compared with the corresponding month in 2009.

During January to April 2010, the sales value of the manufacturing sector in Malaysia grew 22.9 percent or 32.1 billion ringgit (9.85 billion U.S. dollars) to 172.5 billion ringgit (52. 91 billion U.S. dollars).
