The Republic of Kazakhstan is the world's biggest landlocked nation. Its total territory of 2.72 million square kilometers is greater than that of Western Europe.

Kazakhstan declared itself an independent country on December 16th, 1991. The capital was moved from its largest city, Almaty, to Astana in 1997. With 15.8 million people, the nation boasts the 62nd largest population in the world, though the density is less than six people per square kilometer. Kazakhstan has an abundant supply of accessible mineral and fossil fuel resources. The country forecasts that it will become a leading exporter of uranium by 2010. Kazakhstan is ethnically and culturally diverse, with Islam serving as its major religion. Approximately 65 percent of the population is Muslim. Education is universal and mandatory through the secondary school level, and the adult literacy rate is 99.5 percent.
