Erekat: Abbas seriously considering visit to Gaza

06-22-2010 16:57 BJT

RAMALLAH, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said Monday that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas seriously considered visiting the Gaza Strip ruled by Islamic Hamas movement.

Erekat told Voice of Palestine Radio that "for President Abbas, there is nothing more important than achieving the inter- Palestinian reconciliation, and he is seriously considering a visit to Gaza to see the reality of the situation."

The Gaza Strip was seized by Hamas three years ago following weeks of bloody inter fighting with Abbas' Fatah party and his security forces. After Hamas seized control of the enclave by force, it routed Abbas' forces.

Erekat accused Hamas movement of considering the regional decisions at the expense of the Palestinian interest "by obstructing the reconciliation."

"The Palestinian (National) Authority has exerted every possible effort to achieve the reconciliation and has accepted all Hamas demands, but all was in vain," said Erekat.

He called on Hamas to consider the highest interests of the Palestinian people and sign on the reconciliation pact that was drafted by Egypt last October.

Hamas has held that it has reservations that need to be considered before the implementation of any reconciliation agreement.

On Sunday, Abbas revealed for the first time to the Ramallah- based al-Ayyam Daily that he was seriously considering a visit to the Gaza Strip, adding "achieving the reconciliation would encourage me more to visit there."

Meanwhile, Hamas considered Abbas' declaration as a "maneuver," adding that it was not officially notified that Abbas intends to visit the Gaza Strip.
