Nearly 51,000 drug-related crime cases handled in 2009

BEIJING, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Courts across the country handled a total of 50,928 drug-related crime cases in 2009, up 16.5 percent from the year before, the Supreme People's Court said Thursday ahead of the annual international anti-drug day.

In these cases, more than 56,000 people were convicted. More than 17,400 of them received severe penalties ranging from five years' imprisonment to capital punishment, an increase of 8.8 percent year-on-year, according to a press conference held by the Supreme People's Court.

The annual International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking falls on Saturday this year.
