ISLAMABAD, June 25 (Xinhua) -- A key commander of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a banned militant group, was arrested in Karachi, the southern coastal city of Pakistan, local media reported Friday.

Police, following secret intelligence reports, launched a crackdown in Baldia Town locality in Karachi Thursday and arrested the most wanted chief commander "Zafar Hussain" of TTP of Swat, a valley famous for tourism in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

A pistol was also seized from his possession, according to the private TV GEO News. Police registered a case against him and started interrogation.

Police sources disclosed that the arrested commander had carried out various terrorist attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and was wanted by police for many years.

In December, 2008, Taliban captured most of the area of Swat and banned girls' education. Pakistani government announced an operation against Taliban in April 2009. After the start of massive operation by Pakistan Army many Taliban militants arrested or killed and rest fled to neighboring Afghanistan and other parts of the country. Pakistan Army has cleared the area and opened it for the tourists.

TTP Swat chief Maulana Fazlullah, reportedly, was killed by Afghan forces in Afghanistan in the last week of May.
