Philippine president swears in Cabinet members

MANILA, June 30 (Xinhua) -- Philippine President Benigno Aquino III, in his first act as the country's chief executive, administered on Wednesday the oath-taking of the members of his cabinet team.

Aquino on Tuesday disclosed his choices for the Cabinet and other senior positions whom he said will help him in his goal to root out corruption problems and improve the live of the Filipinos.

The members, hand-picked by Aquino based on their competence, were either former government officials or prominent businessmen whom he believes have extensive professional experience.

Aquino's economic team includes Cesar V. Purisima and Cayetano W. Paderanga, Jr. who will return as Philippines' Finance secretary and Socioeconomic Planning chief, respectively.

The Philippines is currently facing a huge fiscal deficit and is among the issues that Purisima and Paderanga will have to address.

Aquino has appointed 28 members to various positions. The president is expected to have his first cabinet meeting on Wednesday afternoon.
