WASHINGTON, June 30 (Xinhua) -- U.S. National Hurricane Center said later Wednesday that Alex, the first Atlantic hurricane of the season, has made landfall in northeastern Mexico.

Alex strengthened into a Category 2 hurricane with winds of 105 mph before making landfall on Wednesday night.
The National Hurricane Center announced that the eye of the storm made landfall around 9 p.m. CDT along the coast of Mexico in the municipality of Soto La Marina, about 110 miles (177 km) south of Brownsville, Texas.
