TOKYO, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed sharply lower Thursday with the key Nikkei index plunging 2.07 percent to a fresh seven-month closing low.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 Average shed 191.04 points to 9,191.60. The broader Topix index was down 13.03 points, or 1.55 percent, to 828.39.
Trading volume on the main section contracted to 1,761.71 million shares from 1,862.98 million Wednesday.
On the first section declining shares beat advancing ones 1,342 to 254.
