ISLAMABAD, July 12 (Xinhua) -- The explosives strapped around the body of a suicide bomber was detonated prematurely killing himself on Monday before reaching the likely target in the suburbs of district Kohat, northwest Pakistan, local police said.

The suicide bomber blew up near the residence of Malik Sawab Khan, a local tribal elder in Khawasi Banda area in the suburbs of Kohat.

Malik Sawab was injured in an ambush on his vehicle a month ago.

The Pakistani security forces have stepped up wide-scale operations against insurgent militants in the northwest Pakistan following Friday's twin suicide blasts in Mohamand Agency that killed 106 and injured almost a similar number of people. However, the militants have retaliated more forcefully hitting other targets on Monday.

A rocket was fired at the local press club in Bara bazaar in Khyber Agency area, no casualties were reported thanks to the prevailing curfew that kept people away from the streets.

A girls school was destroyed in a bomb blast in adjacent Bajaur Agency. While a 10-kilogram bomb was also defused early morning on Monday in Mohmand Agency
