Rare earth smugglers arrested in China

BEIJING, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese customs authorities said Wednesday that seven suspects implicated in the smuggling of 4,196 tonnes of rare earth metals and their compounds had been arrested.

The case, uncovered by the Nanning branch of the General Administration of Customs (GAC) in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, involved rare earth elements valued at 109 million yuan (16.09 million U.S. dollars), the GAC said.

By listing false product names, the suspects evaded paying taxes of more than 13 million yuan, said the GAC.

According to China's laws, the export of rare earth elements, which are considered strategically important resources, is under strict control.

Rare earth, including minerals such as dysprosium, terbium, thulium and yttrium, is widely used in used in the most sophisticated fields of science and technologies including aviation, atomic energy and weaponry manufacturing.
