Kyrgyz interim leader unveils lineup of caretaker government

07-15-2010 10:05 BJT

BISHKEK, July 14 (Xinhua) -- President Roza Otunbayeva on Wednesday unveiled a "technical government" that will run the country in the three months before an elected government takes over in October.

The reshuffling came after sevreal interim ministers stepped down to prepare to run in parliamentary elections in October that will give the winners the right to form a new government.

The structure of the caretaker government, with 17 ministries and a state committee, is in line with the new constitution approved in a referendum last month.

Otunbayeva said the primary tasks of the caretaker government were to ensure energy and food security, prepare to meet the demand for heating fuel in winter and handle social and economic issues.

Kyrgyzstan held a referendum last month to approve a new constitution that turned the central Asian country into a parliamentary republic.

Otunbayeva, inaugurated July 3 as president for the transitional period until Dec. 31, 2011, also serves as prime minister until the winners of the October election form a new government.
