Death toll of typhoon Conson in Philippines rises to 18

MANILA, July 14 (Xinhua) -- The death toll of Typhoon Conson has climbed to 18, the Philippine National Disaster Coordinating Council said in a statement released at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Moreover, 57 people were reported missing and 12 others were injured, the NDCC said.

The number of victims will continue to rise as more people called for help in finding for missing relatives.

A total of 4,935 families were affected by Conson at 74 villages in two cities and 19 municipalities in northern Philippines.

Of the 19 fishermen who were earlier reported missing in Catanduanes region, eight have been rescued and were admitted into a local hospital, and 11 others are still missing.

Conson has weakened into a tropical storm after landing in the Philippines on Tuesday night. Its center was estimated at 180 km west of Zambales in Luzon region with maximum sustained winds of 85 kph near the center at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
