SINAGAR, India-controlled Kashmir, July 14 (Xinhua) -- An Indian army officer of the rank of major was killed and six troopers were injured in an ongoing gunfight in India-controlled Kashmir, Indian defense officials Wednesday said.

The gunfight started late Tuesday night in the Beri Rakh forest area of Mendhar in Poonch district, 220 km northwest of Jammu, the winter capital of India-controlled Kashmir.

"The gunfight started Tuesday night after Army launched an operation to flush out militants in the area. The contingent came under heavy firing from the side of militants, due to which seven troopers including two majors were injured. Later on one major succumbed to injuries in hospital," said Lt. Col. Biplab Nath, the Indian army spokesman based in Jammu.

The slain officer has been identified as Major Amit Thenge.

The injured troopers have been hospitalized and are stated to be stable.

The Indian army has cordoned the area and reinforcements have been rushed to the area to take on militants. Further details are awaited.

Police and defense officials maintain that most of the times the operations triggering gunfights are carried out on prior information about presence of militants in specific areas.

The gunfighting between militants and Indian army troops in India-controlled Kashmir takes place intermittently.
