Some 875,000 Portuguese watch each match of South Africa World Cup

LISBON, July 14 (Xinhua) -- An average of 875,000 Portuguese people watched each match of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, according to estimations of the media company Initiative.

The matches which the Portuguese national soccer team played in had an average of 1.9 million viewers and the total audience was around 3.3 million, who watched Portugal playing by the public channel RTP1 and the private SportTV.

Compared with the 2006 World Cup in Germany, according to Initiative, there was a reduction on the number of the audience in Portugal.

It also said that the public channel RTP1, which broadcasted all the matches of the Portuguese team and 28 matches more, was not able to surpass the leadership of the private channel TVI, which had 26.8 percent of the audience, while RTP1 had 26.3 percent.
