CHICAGO, Jul 14 (Xinhua) -- A 73-year-old Chicago area man and three of his grandchildren were killed when their small plane crashed on an interstate highway in northern Michigan on Tuesday, authorities said.

A 13-year-old grandson, Yossi Menora, the only survivor, was thrown from the plane and suffered severe burns, authorities said. He was airlifted to an area hospital.

The pilot, Moshe Menora of Skokie, Ill., was killed along with Rikki Menora, 16; Rachel Menora, 14; and Sara Klein, 17.

The plane was registered to Tri-United Management, where Moshe Menora was chief executive. He had just refueled his twin-engine Beechcraft Model 58 and was taking off from Mackinac County Airport in St. Ignace around 5 p.m. Tuesday when the plane encountered difficulties, authorities said.

The plane crossed over northbound Interstate 75 and struck the median barrier before flipping over and coming to rest on the shoulder of southbound I-75, the Mackinac County sheriff's office said.

No vehicles on the highway were hit.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety board will investigate.
