Heat forces Russian Army to restrict ammunition used in drills

07-15-2010 10:49 BJT

MOSCOW, July 14 (Xinhua) -- The Russian Army has temporarily stopped using incendiary ammunition during training because of the extremely hot weather, military officials said.

"Additional security measures are being taken in the Russian Army in relation with the jump in temperatures. Tracer, incendiary and illumination munitions have been temporarily prohibited during exercises," Col. Oleg Yushkov said.

Personnel are prohibited from remaining in the sun for long periods and have been provided with additional water, he said.

"The dress code has been eased during the hot weather. Sleeves may be rolled up to the elbows, the upper buttons may be unbuttoned," Yushkov said.

Violations of safety regulations at a military training ground in Saratov region last week caused a blast that killed an officer.
