Ukraine plans to build another sea port in Black Sea

07-15-2010 10:52 BJT

KIEV, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Ukraine is planning to beef up its Black Sea shipping capability by building another port in Crimea, to bring its port facilities in the region to 16 in total.

The plan was disclosed by the Crimean Council of Ministers in a statement.

The new port facilities will be located at the town of Evpatoria.

"Creating such a complex is necessary for Ukraine to be an important part of the international cargo transportation system," said Vasyl Dzarty, head of the Council.

"We should effectively use our country's infrastructural potentials," said Dzarty during a visit to Evpatoria on Tuesday.

The council chief stressed that Ukraine could lose its international transit status if it fails to build modern logistic facilities despite its favorable geographical location.

In the first phase of the new port project Ukraine plans to increase the cargo handling capability of the peninsula, through re-locating a ferry and constructing roads, railway lines, parking terminals and other facilities, said the statement.

In the second phase new docking berths and container terminals are to be added.

"This is a long-term project to be finished by 2025. Even by 2015 the volume of cargo transportation can grow to 2.5 million tons and by 2025 -- to 9 million tons. It would put Ukraine at an honored position of world trade routes," Dzarty said.

The Odessa Sea Commercial Port is currently the largest Ukrainian port facility in the Black Sea, with an annual handling capacity of 14 million tons of dry cargo and 24 million tons of oil products.
