Ghanaian refugees in Togo return home

07-15-2010 13:41 BJT

ACCRA, July 14 (Xinhua) -- A number of Ghanaians, who left their homes in the northeast and fled to neighboring northern Togo after communal violence early this year, have returned to their residents, media here reported on Wednesday.

A BBC correspondent reported from Togo last May that as many as 3,500 Ghanaian refugees had crossed into northern Togo as a result of ethnic conflict and land disputes in the northern part of Ghana.

The Ghanaian government rejected the report, saying that no more than 500 Ghanaian went into Togo. Media reports reaching here said the returnees, most of who returned from Togo, were seen busily doing about their normal businesses without any disturbances and others were preparing their farmland to take advantage of the farming season.

Ghana's Disaster and Relief Agency (NADMO) was assisting people whose houses were burnt and their properties destroyed in the conflict in the resettlement process through the provision of some relief items.

The Relief agency was supplying the victims with materials including roofing sheets, cement, blankets, buckets and food items for the reconstruction of buildings for their resettlement.

Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) had also beefed-up security with the presence of both armed police and military personnel in the area to ensure the safety of residents and their properties.
