8 killed in Nigeria's Taraba State

LAGOS, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Eight persons were killed while several others were injured following a clash between some armed youths in Nigeria's eastern Taraba State, local police reported on Wednesday.

The crisis, which started at about 2 a.m. local time on Tuesday, led to the youths barricading streets, making bonfires and destroying properties.

State Police Commissioner Aliyu Musa confirmed the incident to Xinhua on telephone, adding that a unit of the mobile police had been sent to quell the crisis.

The commissioner said he had ordered a stakeholders security meeting in the area to be attended by the Wukari council chairman, traditional rulers and security agents.

Musa said it was during the meeting that some youths took to the streets in an attempt to express dissatisfaction with the steps being taken to resolve the crisis.

He said the demonstration resulted in a confrontation between the two groups, leading to the demolition of more than six structures.

On March 7, a new wave of Muslim-Christian clashes erupted in Jos which is not far away from Taraba State, weeks after a local sectarian violence. The police put the death toll at 109 people, mostly women and children.

Earlier reports said the new confrontation in Taraba State involved local Muslims and Christians.
