Fishing boat catches fire in Malacca Straits, 8 rescued

PORT DICKSON, Malaysia, July 15 (Xinhua) -- A fishing boat with two Chinese and six Filipinos aboard caught fire Thursday morning in the Malacca Straits.

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency confirmed the incident here on Thursday.

According to the agency, the eight people were rescued by a nearby cargo ship and they have been rushed to a hospital here.

The boat is expected to be dragged to the dock Thursday afternoon.

According to the agency, the Singapore-bound fishing boat was registered in Taiwan. The accident took place at 7 a.m. at about 15 nautical miles away from Port Dickson in the state of Negeri Sembilan, western shore of Peninsula Malaysia.

Earlier, it was reported that eight Taiwanese were on board but the Malaysian police later confirmed that there were two Chinese and six Filipinos aboard instead.
