Mosque, shrines blasted in Pakistan's NW Khyber Agency

07-15-2010 14:25 BJT

ISLAMABAD, July 15 (Xinhua) -- A mosque, having an archeological value, and its adjacent shrines were razed to rubble in an overnight Thursday explosion in Landikotal area of restive Khyber Agency in northwest Pakistan, local police and eyewitnesses said.

Luckily no one was hurt in the incident in which an explosive device was detonated by unidentified miscreants. The "Ishkhel" mosque was a hundred years old and some of the revered shrines of "sufi" saints that attract thousands of devotees were also damaged.

It was for the first time that a mosque was desecrated by insurgent terrorists in the troubled tribal belt of Pakistan bordering Afghanistan.

The desecration of the 16th century "Babri mosque," built by Moghul Emperor Akbar, by extremist Hindu militants in India on Dec. 6, 1992 created a worldwide uproar and condemnation.

The insurgent Taliban militants who have resorted to sabotage for spearheading transplantation of their own ultra orthodox version of faith Islam exhibit zero-tolerance against any practice which is not in accordance with their philosophy. Pakistan has witnessed in the past several incidents of militants occupying prominent shrines in its tribal areas prohibiting devotees' visit to them.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a police van was completely destroyed in a Wednesday night bomb blast in Gujranwala city in the eastern Punjab province. Nobody was hurt in the incident as policemen were eating out in a nearby restaurant, local media reported.
