Afghan gov't confirms abduction of health personnel, calls for release

KABUL, July 15 (Xinhua) -- The Afghanistan Public Health Ministry on Thursday confirmed the abduction of its four employees in Taliban birthplace southern kandahar province and called for their immediate release.

"Unknown armed men abducted a health team including three doctors and their driver on Wednesday afternoon on the way between Maiwand and Kandahar city," said a statement released by Public Health Ministry.

The statement described the abducted doctors as the servants of the people calling upon the abductors to set them free and enable them to join their families.

However, it did not point finger at any particular groups or individuals.

Kandahar has been the scene of increasing Taliban-linked insurgency over the past couple of years. Unknown armed men also gunned down a tribal elder inside a mosque in kandahar city the capital of Kandahar province on Wednesday evening.
