07-16-2010 09:55 BJT

ISLAMABAD, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Jet strikes and ground offensives killed 15 militants and wounded another six on Thursday in Orakzai Agency tribal area, northwest of Pakistan, local media reported citing official sources.

The air strikes have also destroyed three hideouts of militants.

During a search for militants operation at least 37 including seven notorious miscreants were rounded up in Orakzai, which is the only of the seven tribal administrative agencies which does not border Afghanistan.

Pakistani military has been fighting an insurgency at least for past seven years in its rugged tribal areas bordering Afghanistan. After scoring significant progress, the army chief had declared victory against militants in early June and subsequently some Internally Displaced People (IDPs) have also started returning home as well.

But Taliban, the extremist have reportedly been regrouping to take the territory with an ambition to reimpose their own ultra orthodox version of Islam in the region. Pakistan government had inked several agreements with militants during 2004-2009 in quest for peace in the region, but it all fell apart.
