MOSCOW, July 15 (Xinhua) -- During their bilateral talks concerning economic and political issues, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and German Chancellor Angela Merkel nonetheless cannot avoid the just concluded World Cup in South Africa on Thursday.
Soccer proved to be the hot topic at the lunch table in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg, local media reported.
It was first triggered by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Victor Zubkov, who voiced support for Germany.
"Of course, if it weren't for Paul, you know who I'm talking about, Paul the octopus, everything would probably have been fine."
"Yesterday we ate his brother," Medvedev added.
Germany secured third place in the World Cup after beating Uruguay 3-2.
Paul the oracle octopus became world famous as he predicted the outcomes of all Germany's games correctly, including its semifinal defeat by Spain.
He also forecast Spain's victory over the Netherlands in the final.
Paul, who became a pop culture sensation, was eased into retirement Monday.
