Thai opposition denies news report of choosing new party leader

07-16-2010 14:24 BJT

BANGKOK, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Executive members of Thailand's leading opposition Puea Thai Party (PTP) have never formally discussed who should be the new leader of the PTP party, northern Chiang Mai province MP Surapong Towichakchaikul said on Friday, the Bangkok Post's website reported.

Surapong was responding to a media report that ousted former Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra had approached former finance minister MR Pridiyathorn Devakula inviting him to lead the opposition camp.

"I have no idea about the report, but if it is true it would be good because we would then have a capable person to help resolve the country's problems," Surapong said.

However, now it was not the time to discuss about a new party leader as it was better to wait until the election mode comes around, he said.

In a related development, the Matichon online cited an informed source at the Puea Thai Party as saying that Thaksin had invited MR Pridiyathorn to head the party.

The report said MR Pridiyathorn was interested in the invitation, but on the condition that he must be able to work independently.

Meanwhile, MR Pridiyathorn himself also confirmed he had been approached by a key figure in the opposition camp, but said it was not Thaksin.

"The invitation was made before the recent political unrest by a person who is younger than me," MR Pridiyathorn said.

MR Pridiyathorn said further that "but, I rejected the invitation on ground that the social division's problem was so critical that I would not be able to settle it."
