BEIJING, July 16 (Xinhuanet) -- Studies find that for elder woman, the more one weighs, the poorer her mental performance is. But among obese senior women, those who are apple-shaped, that is, have their fat around their waists, are sharper than those pear-shaped, or fat around the hips.

Diana Kerwin of Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago and her colleagues published their study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society on July 14.

They studied more than 8,700 women aging between 65 to 79 years old on the connection between obesity and brain function. Each participant was given a memory test, and the researchers analyze the correlation of their shape and height-adjusted weight, which is known as Body Mass Index (BMI), and came to the conclusion that as a woman’s BMI increases, her memory decreases.

Research workers explained different types of fat influence a woman’s health in different ways. Pear-shaped women may be more possibly to have a type of fat around the hips that produces hormones causing inflammation, which could then influence knowledge and blood flow to the brain.

Possible explanation given by the experts said that pear-shaped women may have a specific kind of fat accumulate around the hips that produced hormones causing inflammation, which could hinder blood flow to the brain, thus making it harder to memorize or learn things.
