900 evacuated in El Salvador due to flooding

MEXICO CITY, July 19 (Xinhua) -- About 900 Salvadoreans were evacuated overnight Monday due to flooding triggered by heavy rains in recent days.

According to news reports reaching here from El Salvador, in San Marcos Lempa of the country's southern Usulutan region, some 200 people were evacuated in the wake of flooding of the Lempa River and unloading of a hydroelectric dam.

Meanwhile, almost 700 people were evacuated from the municipalities of San Luis La Herradura and San Pedro Masahuat in the La Paz and Jiquilisco regions.

The evacuations began late night Sunday and continued till Monday.

The Education Ministry said Monday school activities were suspended in the coastal zones of San Vicente, La Paz and Usulutan due to the rains.

The Civil Protection Department reported that communities in Nuevo Amanecer and El Angel, as well as in the regions of La Paz, San Vicente, San Salvador and Chalatenango, have been affected by the rains.

The department issued a yellow alert for all coastal zones and a green alert for the rest of the territory, as the rain will continue.

In La Paz, about 1,500 people were isolated Sunday due to flooding of local rivers, but they have already received humanitarian aid, according to the authorities.
