RIO DE JANEIRO, July 21 (Xinhua) -- The Sao Paulo soccer team was unable to hold on to their lead and held to a 1-1 draw by Gremio Prudente on Wednesday in the 10th round of the Brazilian Championship.

In the very first minute of play, Sao Paulo took the lead on the scoreboard as Washington, in his first game as a starter in more than three months, received the ball wide-open from Giovanni, tapping the ball into the empty net.

Gremio Prudente tied the match in the 20th minute. Off a corner kick, Anderson Luis leaped between defenders to head the ball into the goal.

Sao Paulo now stands in 12th place with 12 points. Gomes has not yet won a game since the tournament returned to action on July 14 after a month-long break due to the World Cup in South Africa.

In the next round of play, Sao Paulo will travel to play Santos on July 25. The team will then face Internacional in the first round of the semifinals of the Libertadores Cup.

Gremio Prudente will host Vitoria on July 24 in the 11th round of the 2010 Brazilian Championship.
