The planned appointment was confirmed by a person who is close to BP's board, the New York Times reported.

The replacement comes as the London-based company looks to recover its position in the United States after the oil spill incident in the Gulf of Mexico.

Dudley, director of BP's oil spill response unit, is ready to be announced as the company's first American chief and to take the helm on Oct. 1, Bloomberg reported, citing a source with knowledge of the matter.

Dudley, 54, was born in New York and grew up in Mississippi, part of the Gulf Coast region suffering environmental and economic damage from the oil spill.

"The fact he is American should help to keep things a little more straightforward in his dealings with the U.S. administration,” said Ted Harper, who helps manage 6.8 billion dollars at Frost Investment Advisors in Houston.
