BEIJING, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Food poisoning in China killed 58 between April and June, up 20.8 percent year on year from 2009, the Ministry of Health said here Thursday.

A total of 58 food poisoning incidents also sickened 1,945 others in the second quarter, the ministry said in a report posted on its website.

About 53.4 percent of such cases happened at home, it said.

There were 11 cases of food poisoning in schools nationwide, involving 620 people with no death.

Bacteria-induced food poisoning and poisonous meat and vegetables were the main causes. Seven people were killed by taking rat poisons.

Warning high risk of food poisoning during the summer, the ministry urged various health departments to carefully investigate and report food poisoning cases.
