08-14-2010 08:26 BJT

MOSCOW, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- The deployment of the S-300 air defense system in Abkhazia does not violate Russia's international obligations, the Foreign Ministry said Friday.

"The system is an integral part of military equipment deployed at our military base in Abkhazia, which is intended solely for defensive purposes," ministry spokesman Andrey Nesterenko was quoted as saying by the RIA Novosti news agency.

The deployment would not destabilize the situation in the region, Nesterenko said.

Also Friday, a Kremlin source told Russian media that the S-300 system was actually deployed in Abkhazia two years ago.8 A Russian Air Force commander announced on Wednesday that Russia has deployed an S-300 air defense system in Georgia's breakaway region of Abkhazia.
