Palestinian in custody after breaking into Turkish embassy in Tel Aviv

08-18-2010 10:17 BJT

JERUSALEM, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- The Turkish embassy in Tel Aviv handed over a Palestinian man, who earlier broke into the compound and was shot by guards, to the Israeli police late Tuesday.

The man, after being held in the embassy for nearly six hours, was taken into custody and sent to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

According to the Turkish Foreign Ministry, the suspect broke the window and entered the embassy building, carrying a knife, a fuel can and a toy gun.

Witnesses said gunshots were heard then, and one of the building's window was broken by a bullet.

An Israeli police anti-terror team and emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene shortly afterward. Hayarkon Street, the beachfront road where the embassy is located, was sealed off.

But the embassy staff denied entry of police forces and paramedics into the building, citing diplomatic protocols.

Israeli police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld told Xinhua that the event was dealt with on the diplomatic level between the Turks and Israeli Foreign Ministry.

The Turkish government later confirmed that the suspect was shot by security guards when trying to take hostage.

He "raved that he was seeking asylum and attempted to take the vice consul as hostage," the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement. No one else was injured during the incident.

The man was identified by the Israeli police as Nadim Injaz, a Palestinian from the West Bank town of Ramallah.

He claimed to be a former informant of Israeli security forces.

In 2006, Nadim barricaded himself in the British embassy in Tel Aviv and claimed that Shin Bet, the Israeli security agency, was trying to kill him.
