Indonesian VP supports nuclear energy

08-20-2010 09:35 BJT

JAKARTA, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian Vice President Boediono said on Thursday that he supports the use of nuclear technology for peace purpose in Indonesia with the implementation in energy sector.

Speaking in an audience with students of National Resilience Institution (Lemhanas) in his office, the vice president said that Indonesia must not be spoiled with abundance of natural and energy resources available across the country.

"We must take the benefit from nuclear technology as much as we can," he said, responding to question launched by a student about the government's plan to construct nuclear power plant.

He pointed out that Indonesia must have profound knowledge on nuclear technology, saying that it would obviously be used in the future.

Responding to the fear about the risk from the nuclear power plant and the high cost to run such a power plant, Boediono reaffirmed that mastering the nuclear technology would be the answer to those questions.

"We must have broad knowledge about aspects regarding the operation of a nuclear reactor so as to assure the safety and reduce the operation cost as well," he was quoted by the Kompas. com as saying.

Indonesia has reserved a nuclear power plant site in Central Java's northern coastal area of Kudus, expected to operate in 2016.

Despite of problems that linger in the construction process, research and efforts to commence the project are underway at the moment.
