MOSCOW, Aug 19 (Xinhua) -- Moscow finally said good-bye to the month-long summer heat as heavy rains dropped temperatures down to 20-23 degrees Celsius Thursday.
"It is connected with blocking anticyclone that had been keeping the heat and drought and finally gave up," said a statement released on the official meteorological website Meteonovosti.
Aug. 19 was reported by Russian media as the last hot day this summer. The long awaited cooling came for the first time in two months of exhausting heat.
Heavy rain has already pounced upon Moscow till Thursday noon. Forecasts predicted this was just the beginning as storms are expected by the end of the week.
It was reported that the temperature would slide to 11-13 degrees Celsius Friday.
Moscow had suffered a record-breaking hot summer this year. Experts said the scorching weather in Russia this summer has been unparalleled for at least one thousand years.
