Italian PM rallies supporters in case of early vote

ROME, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on Monday rallied his supporters warning them to prepare in case of an early vote.

In an audio message sent to his People of Freedom party's clubs and fan groups, the premier called them to wage a pre-electoral battle by rooting on the territory and campaigning in favor of the government, according to daily Corriere della Sera.

"We must re-organize our party's presence across Italy and be prepared for anything, including early elections and this may happen very soon,"he said.

It's an official call to arms to his supporters and political volunteers, mostly youth ready to embody Berlusconi's message and spread awareness on his achievements.

"If the government elected by the people shall not anymore enjoy a solid and compact majority enabling it to implement what has been promised to voters during the electoral campaign, the only road ahead is the one bringing back to the citizens'judgment, which is sovereign," Berlusconi stressed in the message, posted on his party's website.

On Friday the People of Freedom Party approved a 5-point strategic document to be presented to parliament in September, on which the premier intends to put a vote of confidence to test his majority after the rift with his former ally, House speaker Gianfranco Fini.

Berlusconi has repeatedly stressed that the text was not open to changes and warned that if he lost the vote the country would face an early poll. His former allies have not much appreciated the ultimatum, while the premier has openly threatened them to create an independent parliamentary group saying it was "a paradoxical initiative."

The first test for the ailing majority is set for Sept. 8, when the council of ministers will reunite after the summer break.
