Spokesman of Civil Protection National Authority Antonio Machado said the two separate accidents, which happened on the highway between the northern cities of Aveiro and Viseu, were "serious and violent."

Machado said that two from the five deaths were burnt, 48 from the injured were in critical conditions and 12 from the 50 damaged cars burned.

Eighteen doctors have gone to the places of accidents to assist the injured with some of them taken to the hospitals.

The accidents occurred due to "adverse atmospheric conditions," including rain and fog, according to the authorities.

The accidents led to a four hour traffic jam on the highway.
